It’s not all about growing either. At Farnham Local Food there are many areas that need your help and not all of them require getting your hands dirty. We’ll talk with anyone who is prepared to give a few hours of their time regularly or as a one-off. Please click here to get in touch.
Help to grow food at Farnham Local Food. Come for as much or as little time as you want. We’d love to see you. Tasks include preparing land, sowing seed, planting, weeding, watering and harvesting. You don’t need experience or knowledge. Just bring your enthusiasm and willingness to learn. We’ll supply the rest.
We meet every Tuesday and Thursday between 10am – 5pm during British Summer Time and 10am – 4pm through the darker winter months.
Help to construct sheds, raised beds, polytunnels, benders, fences and much, much more. Please see our project list for more details of what needs doing.
Most work is currently done during the Tuesday & Thursday sessions but we sometimes have evening work-parties during the summer months. Contact us to go onto our Work-party Volunteers list and be notified of these.
Farnham Local Food is always growing! So, we need a special someone to help us raise the money to make all our exciting plans come true. If you have the skills to do just that do get in touch. We’d need you to generate fun ideas, liaise with our grant applications coordinator and help to coordinate fund-raising and publicity events. From time to time we’d ask you to attend Board meetings as well so that we can all get to know you. Experience would be good but it’s not essential. Good communication skills would be an asset. You’ll also need ready access to the internet, e-mail and telephone.
Without arrangement we are happy to see you any Saturday on collection days to help with the harvest. This is probably the most rewarding part of volunteering as you get to reap the rewards of the harvest. There’s nothing better than picking off the broad beans, finding those hidden green beans, chopping off the corn on the cobs, picking the reddest tomatoes, forking up a multitude of potatoes or pulling up the carrots. This is a great thing for kids to do, they can really understand where vegetables come from when they can pick them themselves. There’s something satisfying about picking your own produce in the morning and cooking it up a few hours later for dinner.
Turn up from 9.30 on Saturdays at Runfold and enjoy the experience of harvesting!
- Trainee Growers: Our head grower, Gavin, is interested in ‘growing growers’ as well as growing veg. If you would like to learn the skills of growing vegetables under the supervision of an experienced and friendly grower while assisting in the running of our sites, this is the one for you. You’ll have to be a committed person, willing to offer six hours per week to the project, getting involved in planning the crops, deciding on the best way to cultivate them and asking lots of questions. We’d want you to offer your new-found skills and expertise back to FLF as the organisation goes forward. You’ll also need a car to be able to get between our two sites.
- Regular Volunteers: If you’re ready for a regular commitment, relish the the chance to work alongside a friendly bunch of people growing vegetables and fruit, and like the idea of a discount on your weekly vegetable share, then join us as a weekly volunteer. Weekly volunteers commit to help out each week. They show up whatever the weather and do whatever gardening jobs need doing – hoeing, planting, seeding, rotovating – all professional direction. Weekly volunteers learn a lot about growing vegetables and get to know each other really well. You don’t need experience or expertise, just a willingness to learn and an acceptance of the British weather! Some weekly volunteers commit to three hours and others to six. The vegetable discount depends on the number of hours worked and you’ll need to prove yourself before we can offer this benefit.
Our Guidelines for Gardening Members document explains in more detail how we work together. It helps to keep us productive, safe, legal and focussed!
Are you great with children?
Come and volunteer as our children’s coordinator. We’d love you to dream up events, activities and ideas to entertain children on site, and then make them happen. You would liaise with our grower, Susie, on the children’s garden, be in touch with local schools to organise school visits and keep in touch with the volunteer co-ordinator too.
We’ve the venue, refreshment facilities and participants but we need people to bring it all together and actively organise events that our members can attend. Here’s a role in the community that isn’t an open-ended commitment.
Come along on the day of our event and help out. Show prospective new members around the sites, help make the tea, set out tables, as little or as much as you want to help out. We’ll be happy to see you.
Not everyone in Farnham knows who we are or what we do. Our Marketing group is always looking for volunteers to help out. This could be designing PR material, manning stalls at local fairs and fetes, knocking on doors in the vicinity of our sites, leaflet-dropping, devising material and helping out at the promotional talks we are often asked to give.
Do you have things we might find useful? A list of things we are looking for can be found on the Donating page. Whatever you have, do let us know.
