March 2/4th

What's been happening at FLF over the last couple of weeks.

March 2nd

There has been lots of planting up at Crondal over the past couple of weeks all in preparation for transporting over to Runfold in readiness for the first planting party, and eventually our first spring harvest at the new site (keep an eye on the web site for future planting party events).  It has been no mean feat in the cold and (very) wet climate for Sue, Sorel and I but we know that the end of day bedraggled look we seem to have been sporting lately will all be worth it!!  There are lots of lovely seedlings growing in Sue’s greenhouse, so many in fact that I’ve started bringing some home to put in my own greenhouse, which also means that they aren’t far away from their final destination!  There are a lot more seed trays to come back home with me yet, good job I also have a conservatory!

The party that got together on the 20th Feb to place the skin on our new poly tunnel are steaming ahead.  There were lots of small jobs to complete on the frame work before the skin could be attached, unfortunately this meant that they didn’t quite achieve a finished poly tunnel.  However, they got very close and so as a result the tunnel will be completely finished on the 6th March, then they will be repeating this task all over again as our new tunnel has arrived and awaits construction.  Here’s to those hard working guys and our year of growing being extended.

March 4th

More planting up at Crondal.  Sorel, Sue and I spent the best part of the morning clearing a patch of ground containing the remains of last years carrots ( most of which had had the tops eaten by the local wildlife) ready for planting garlic in the afternoon, oh and putting the world to rights of course!   As the sun graced us with her presence the day warmed up and it was very spring like, we even managed to have lunch outside and are now wondering if FLF might supply us with some hammocks for an afternoon siesta as the weather warms up!! Well a girl can dream! Oh, and no bedraggled look at the end of the day as we stayed DRY!!

The afternoon saw us planting carrots up in the poly tunnel, preparing and rotavating (yes I was trusted and let loose with heavy machinery!) land in preparation for planting all the seeds that are growing like crazy in the greenhouse, planting the last of the garlic and taking a trip up to the Dippenhall site for a look at what stage it’s at.

On arrival at Dippenhall we were very excited to see the field has finally been topped, Hurrah!  This means that the farmer who has volunteered his services, for a minimal fee, can get in and plough said field (fingers crossed for Saturday 6th), which means we can ………. Start planting.  Although we aren't in time for the planned Saturday 6th potato planting party (Now cancelled), once the ploughing is completed we can reschedule ASAP.  Exciting stuff, so keep an eye on the web site for a date regarding a planting party in Dippenhall.

Anyone interested in helping with the Saturday 6th March Ploy tunnel event should get their wellies on and come on down to Runfold.  I have seen the weekly predicted forecast and there’s no sign of the wet stuff all week (of course this could change at any time) so you may not even need your wellies, but don’t put your cagoule away just yet!  So your FLF NEEDS YOU to volunteer your time again no matter how brief or expancive that may be, all help is more than appreciated.

Thanks for everyone’s continual input/help in every capacity.
